Choosing the Right Soccer Ball

    Player Size / Age
Consider the size and age of the player when choosing a soccer ball. Don't buy a ball that's too big because it will make it harder to learn basic skills such as shooting, passing and dribbling.

The size of the soccer ball should be proportionate to the size of the athlete; the smaller the player, the smaller the ball.

    Ball Hardness
Get a softer ball for younger players, particularly to practice heading. One type is a PVC plastic ball, geared specifically for youth soccer and made in all sizes.
Advanced players prefer a harder ball, especially for striking. Look for the words "FIFA Approved" or "FIFA Inspected" for higher-end balls.
Know the difference between stitched and laminated balls. The more stitching a ball has, the better the quality. Laminated balls are glued together and also tend to be harder.
    Things to Consider
Consider the weather. Cold weather makes the outside of the soccer ball harder.

Consider purchasing several balls for various purposes. Teams, for example, often have balls they use for practice, saving better-quality balls for competition.
