Girls Nike Air Max

In 1977, a 52-year-old aerospace engineer named Frank Rudy approached Nike with an idea for how to cushion athletic shoes. When Nike co-founder Phil Knight took some prototype shoes out for a run, he was convinced. Max Air would become Nike’s signature cushioning technology.

The Swoosh debuted its newly branded Air cushioning in the 1978 Honolulu Marathon. Its popularity simmered. But it exploded when Nike launched its Air Revolution in 1987, making that Air cushioning visible for the first time under the heel of the Nike Air Max running shoe.

The look of a legacy

It’s not just grown-up runners and athletes who benefit from Max Air. Kids get a piece of that history, too. And girls’ Nike Air Max shoes keep their look on point.

The original Air Max was just the start, though. Subsequent models became so popular, Nike had little choice but to re-release them.

The Air Max 90, a re-release of the 1990 original that was the third in the series, draws elements from its two predecessors. That includes the color blocking on the chunky midsole, the swooping black rand on the upper, and the plastic adjustable lace tab.

The Air Max Plus, which debuted in 1998, features wavy overlays on the upper that were inspired by tropical palm trees swaying in a balmy breeze. And the multi-color gradient that underlies them is sure to draw attention.

The Air Max 270 features one of Nike’s thickest Air units yet, and it’s easy to see under the heel from the sides and from behind; 270 degrees of visibility. The upper combines the exaggerated tongue of the Air Max 180 and classic design elements of the Air Max 93.
