Holding Court

Sport-specific footwear is a big deal, both for athletes and for discerning dressers. And there are perhaps no more popular shoes — on the court or on the street — than basketball shoes. The game of basketball was first introduced in 1891, but ballers — and early sneakerheads — had to wait 26 more years before the introduction of the first basketball shoe: Converse All Stars (soon to be dubbed “Chuck Taylors,” after the basketball player who joined the brand in the 1920s). Today, these shoes are valued more for their universal brand recognition and casual street style than for their performance. But Converse shoes can still take credit for launching a footwear revolution.
