New Meaning to the Phrase Cat-Like Reflexes

In a moment of serendipity, Tinker Hatfield used a black panther as his inspiration for the original Air Jordan XIII at the same time Michael Jordan’s friends were referring to MJ as the “Black Cat.” His incredible reflexes, ability to read his opponents, and hard-driving performance on the court influenced both his nickname and the iconic Air Jordan XIII. You can see the panther-inspired details throughout the original and Retro 13. A hologram on the collar of the shoe looks like a glowing panther eye, and the upper could only look more cat-like if it had whiskers. Flip the shoes over and you can see pods that stretch slightly outward and resemble a panther paw.

Design Stays True to the Original

The Retro 13 maintains the premium details that made the original Air Jordan XIII effective on the hardwood. From a durable upper made with textile, leather, and foam materials depending on the colorway, to the springy, responsive carbon fiber shank plate, these sneakers are still comfortable and classic. A full-length Zoom Air unit in the midsole works with a layer of Phylon lightweight foam for cushioning that will keep your feet comfortable from morning to night.

All the Accolades

The Air Jordan XIII is known for MJ’s continued success on the hardwood during the 1997-98 season. Chicago won its sixth championship, and MJ earned his 10th league scoring title among many other accomplishments. He also wore the XIII during the playoffs but switched to the XIV for the end of the postseason in ’98. Additionally, the Air Jordan XIII was worn in Spike Lee’s “He Got Game,” which inspired the “Black Toe” nickname for the White/True Red/Black colorway.

Rereleased for a New Generation

The Retro 13 first was first released in 2004, calling on famous colorways from the Jordan shoe’s original release. The original set included colorways that are still popular today like the Red/White “Playoff,” Black/Chutney, Navy/University Blue/Flint Grey/White, Black/True Red, and Black/True Red/White. Mid- and low-cut versions have been popular since the original was released in five mid-top colorways and two lows. That trend continues with low- and mid-top Retro 13s receiving an enthusiastic reception.
