Back to the Beginning

When Nike first developed Air technology, the design team wondered what it would be like to walk on air. Nike displayed the first Air Max unit in 1987 and ten years later showed off the first full-length Air unit. About 20 years after that, they developed Air Vapormax, the closest they’ve come to letting us walk on air.

What is Nike Vapormax?

What started as Nike’s Air technology in the late 1980s has evolved to its latest, lightest iteration: Vapormax. This full-length cushioning system sits right below the foot, without any extraneous materials, to deliver the most comfortable, flexible feel yet. The outsole is attached directly to the Air Vapormax unit (without glue or anything else in between) – maintaining the light weight and flexibility that was the Nike design team’s original goal.

Modern and Retro Silhouettes

The Nike Air Vapormax Flyknit is one of the lightest and most comfortable versions made with a Vapormax sole. Flyknit is known for its sock-like fit and breathable feel, so when it was combined with this cushioning technology, the resulting kicks became a revolution for runners and minimalist style enthusiasts alike. Combined with Flywire, a system of threads that integrates with the laces for a snug fit, Vapormax Flyknit shoes generate very little waste during the manufacturing process – so they’re friendly to the environment too.

Retro Air Max, like the Plus, 97, and 95, have taken on Nike’s latest sole, combining the best of these throwback silhouettes with modern comfort.
