Since the mid-1960s, Vans has been creating fun, innovative shoes that continuously redefine streetwear style. The Vans Era — originally named Style 95 — hit the scene in 1976 and featured a padded collar and fresh colorways. Over the years, the Vans brand has made its way into other pop culture phenomena such as film, music, and sports. Vans Classic Slip-Ons were introduced in the late ’70s and quickly gained popularity after Jeff Spicoli (played by Sean Penn) wore them in the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Vans has also sponsored Warped Tour — the longest running concert series in America — since the mid-’90s. Warped Tour was officially named the Vans Warped Tour and began traveling internationally in 1998. Vans also contributed to the world of sports with the Vans Triple Crown Series. This exciting event showcased sports like skateboarding, BMX biking, wakeboarding, and snowboarding, and was first broadcast on ESPN2 in 2000.
History of Vans Era
When brothers Paul and Jim Van Doren first opened their California storefront in 1996, the Van Doren Rubber Company manufactured shoes on-location and sold them directly to the public. On that first day, twelve customers ordered their shoes in the morning and picked them up in the afternoon. In 1976, famous designers Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta dreamed up the Vans Era we all know and love. The Era kicked off the iconic “Off The Wall” slogan that is synonymous with the Vans name today. This phrase comes from skaters tricking “off the wall” when they skated in empty pools. A few years later the game-changing Sk8-Hi (originally Style 38) hit the scene and showed off the eye-catching sidestripe (formerly known as the “jazz stripe”). The Sk8-Hi also provided ankle coverage and support for skateboarders. More recently, Vans has launched the official “Off The Wall” campaign encouraging individuals to be creative, authentic, and enthusiastic in all that they do.
